Exploding Egg by IncognitoMallard
Ever since the release of Gift of the Night Fury, some fans strongly believed that all dragon eggs explode when they hatch. However, the short film only shows Gronckle eggs explode, which would make sense for such a heavily built dragon. It was my belief that as far as anything released, Gronckle eggs are the only eggs which explode.

I had the opportunity to email none other than Tom Owens, the director of Gift of the Night Fury. So I asked him, do all dragon eggs explode?

The response I got, even surprised me a bit! Here is the direct quote from the man himself.

" In answer to the question of the dragons eggs exploding, when i was
developing the idea for the gift of the night fury special, it was
intended that all dragons eggs hatched in some incendiary way. Not all
would explode, but would be flammable or otherwise hazardous in some
way. As the story progressed we wound up seeing only one kind of egg
explode ( for various reasons, mainly we only had 22 minutes to tell
the story and it got filled up quick) so onscreen it's only gronckles
that do it...

It was also discussed that we might be painting ourselves into a
corner with the notion that all eggs are dangerous, because we may in
the future need to have one hatch in a normal cute way, so some of us
thought it should indeed only be the gronckles... So as of now, since
they are the only ones to have done it, it may stay that way.

But in fairness, the answer should be 'it's whatever works'. If we
come up with some fun idea that needs to have them blow up we would,
and vice-versa... It's not as though 'eggs' are going to be a main
feature of all the shows and movies, it may never come up again.

But i can tell you it's sometimes tough to keep track of every story
beat or character we internally develop vs. the tv show. They work on
that elsewhere and the characters and ideas don't always line up
perfectly so fans can get confused. The tv show has characters we
don't and we have several they don't. As i said before, 'it's what
works'. At any time in the development of a movie or show it might
become necessary to invent some new thing ( like toothless' new tail)
or some new character to make a story beat work. As i am sure you are
aware, the movie does not in any way resemble the book...

We just try to make stuff fun to watch. We don't sweat the details..."

I loved that he put so much work and thought into his response. I really enjoyed getting to read it, and I hope you all did too.
